Priority notices and All clear
This page is also in the Courier wiki: https://github.com/rsjsoftwareltd/courier/wiki/Priority-Notices
A Priority notice is for something that must be seen soon. On the computer it has a red PRIORITY NOTICE band, can play a short sound, and comes back to the front of the screen until someone acknowledges it or it expires.
Courier is an extra channel, never a replacement for your fire alarm, PA or bell, radios, or your school's lockdown procedure. It cannot promise that every screen shows a notice: a computer may be off, asleep, locked, signed out, muted or out of reach.
Who can send one #
Administrators can always send a Priority notice. A sender can only if an administrator allows it: General Settings -> Users, the Priority notices column. An administrator can switch every Courier sound off for the school under Message Settings -> Sending -> Priority notices, whatever a sender chooses.
Sending one #
- On New notice, write the notice as usual and tick Send as a Priority notice. The expiry starts at 15 minutes; choose a longer one only on purpose.
- Tick Play a short sound on the computer if you want one.
- Preview... shows a warning box. Read it and tick I have read this, and I am using Courier as an extra channel only. before you can send.
What the computer does #
- The red PRIORITY NOTICE band across the top, and the sound if chosen and allowed.
- The window comes back to the front of the screen about once a minute until it is acknowledged or expires.
- A computer with an RSJ Agent older than 0.8.39 shows it as an ordinary notice; the preview and Results say how many.
Cancel or All clear #
Open the notice from History. Its Results page has a Withdraw this notice card:
- Cancel this notice closes it. Computers showing it are told to close it; computers that have not shown it yet will not show it.
- Send all clear closes it and shows your message instead (for example "All clear. Back to normal."), in a window with a green ALL CLEAR band. Someone who has already acknowledged the Priority notice is shown the all clear too, while the notice is still live, on the computer where they acknowledged it, once they are signed in there.
Results then reads Cancelled or All clear sent, and says how many computers closed the notice or showed the all clear. A computer whose RSJ Agent is too old to close a Priority notice keeps it until someone acknowledges it or it expires; Results lists those, so you can tell people there another way.
