Formatting a notice
This page is also in the Courier wiki: https://github.com/rsjsoftwareltd/courier/wiki/Formatting-a-Notice
A notice can have bold or italic words, a heading, bullet or numbered lists and a highlighted line, in a text size and font you choose. The preview shows exactly what the computers will show.
The toolbar #
Above the message box on New notice there are six buttons. Each one types a short code into the message; the message stays plain text you can read and edit, and the computers show the formatting instead of the code. Hover over a button to see its code.
| Button | What it types | What the computer shows |
|---|---|---|
| B | **words** | bold |
| I | _words_ | italic |
| H | # at the start of a line | a heading |
| • | - at the start of a line | a bullet point |
| 1. | 1. at the start of a line | a numbered list |
| ! | ! at the start of a line | a highlighted line, in an amber band |
You can also type the codes yourself. Select some words and press B or I to make just those words bold or italic; press it again to take it off.
Text size and font #
- Text size is for the whole notice: Normal, Large or Extra large. The preview says roughly how many lines fit on a normal screen at that size; anything longer scrolls.
- More options -> Font chooses one of a short list of fonts. A computer that does not have the font shows Segoe UI instead.
- An administrator sets the school's usual size and font under Message Settings -> Sending -> Notice text.
What older computers show #
Formatting needs the RSJ Agent 0.8.39 or later on the computer. The preview says how many of the chosen computers show the formatting; Older computers will show: opens the plain version they get instead. Courier offers newer versions of the RSJ Agent to your computers by itself.
What it cannot do #
No colours of your own, no pictures, no tables, no underline and no links: a web address is shown as text that cannot be clicked, and the preview warns you if your message contains one. This keeps a notice from being able to imitate anything else on the screen. The highlighted line is always amber, so it can never look like a Priority notice.
